What’s Old is New Again
Saturday, February 21st, 2009For the past few years, I have specialized in skating to be a sprinter. I like short races and have excelled in them. When I was a younger skater I used to race all the races. Everything from the 500m to the 5000m. One year, I actually qualified for World Cups in every distance that was skated! I was really proud of that, top five in Canada in every distance. Since my knee injury, I’ve had to scale back the training and that is when I started focusing on the sprints. Well, this year, I was able to put more training in. I got the idea that I should do a 1500m. To put this into perspective, I haven’t raced a 1500m since Olympic trials - 3 years ago! Needless to say, I was nervous. This Saturday we had our regular training races. I signed up for the 1500m. It didn’t sink in until 20 minutes before I stepped to the line. What was I thinking! The memories of pain started flooding into my brain. Well, I stepped to the line and I just did it. Bam, just like that. It turned out pretty well. I think I will be doing more in the future. It will only help my 1000m. No more being a scaredy-cat! It feels good to step it up.
